History

The Mann Art Gallery's permanent collection was started in 1993 with the building of a Collections Policy by past Director / Curator Grace Eiko Thompson. Our first acquisition was a Frank Sudol wooden vessel titled Lacy Birch purchased through a donation from the Kiwanis Club of Prince Albert in 1994 on the occasion of the KYLA Group retrospective exhibition at the Little Gallery. The main focus of the collection is to aquire works by local artists, regional artists, and national artists. Media represented in the collection include: ceramic works, paintings, photographs, woodworks, 3 dimensional works, tapestry, fibre arts, multimedia works and videos.  Since then the collections has expanded through purchases and donations of fine Canadian craft and both Historical and Contemporary art.  The collection is just recently topped the 600 mark, with new acquisitions being added at a monthly rate.

The Collection

The Permanent Collection still houses both historical and contemporary artworks by local, provincial and national artists. Just as it is the mandate of the gallery to showcase local art parallel to regional, provincial, and national art, the collection's mandate focuses on collecting local artists work, both contemporary and historical, as well as works from around the province. We now have extensive holdings of artists as diverse as Pamela Burrell, Chuck Crate, Mina Forsythe, and Alex Mullie; a large selection of Prince Albert pioneer J. S. Base's paintings, drawings, sketches and painting box & palette, active here in the 1930's. We have secured a large selection (retrospective) of artworks from Prince Albert born artist  Wynona Mulcaster; paintings & drawings from the 1940's up  until 2004.   Among those also represented in our collection are: August          Kenderdine, Don Foulds, George Glenn, Aganetha Dyck, Lorenzo Dupuis Andrée Martinson Felley, Myles MacDonald, Linda Chartier, Ivan Eyre, Bob Boyer, Bodile Lindner, Ernest Lindner and many more.

The MAG has recently purchased the Past Perfect Museum Software program and we have begin the tedious process of entering our collection into a digital database.
