Living Giving Tree, mixed media on bristol board, feathers, cloth, ribbon, fishing line, July 17th - August 13th, 2020, Approx. 22 x 6 x 5 ', Kinsmen Park

Living Giving Tree

On July 17th, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm, Leah Dorion and Danielle Castle made their second install. For this project the artists went a search for a Grandmother tree in Kinsmen Park, Prince Albert, to honour and celebrate as a Living Giving Tree. The tree brought Leah Dorion's book to life; The Giving Tree: A Retelling of a Traditional Metis Story. The artists brought their ladders and climbed into the tree, tying grandmother cloth, ribbons, prayer feathers and crafted bubbles that held the Métis Values to the many branches. Leah and Danielle installed with three Elders sitting in their chairs, watching and rooting for them as they climbed up and down to create a beautiful flow of colors and patterns. Over the two hours many people from the public came to check out the process as they came to visit the park, they stopped to ask about the event and this created discussions about Métis cultures with people of all ages and backgrounds in a safe environment during the pandemic of COVID-19.

Thank you to our sponsors and to each individual who helped make this project possible
