This past Saturday, November 30, the Mann Art Gallery was filled with tranquil energy as we hosted a unique sound bath event within Susan Shantz’s Confluence exhibition. We invited participants to immerse themselves in an extraordinary sensory experience, blending art, sound, and meditation.
As guests arrived, they were greeted by the serene setting of Shantz’s exhibition, where suspended blue tarps and flowing installations mimicked the currents and forms of Prairie water systems. Beneath these evocative artworks, participants were invited to lie or sit comfortably on provided blankets and chairs, ready to embark on a journey of sound and reflection.
Led by sound artist Sandhi, the session featured the resonant tones of crystal singing bowls, chimes, and bells, weaving an auditory tapestry that complemented the exhibition’s themes of water, flow, and connection. Sandhi, a lifelong musician deeply rooted in the practice of Nada yoga (the yoga of sound), shared her perspective on sound as a bridge between the physical and the spiritual:
"I’ve been a musician all my life. Alongside classical training in my youth… I sensed music in the hills, notes in the clouds, mantras from the trees. Most of all I could hear my own song. I learned of Nada yoga while studying yogasana; it described the natural experience of intuitive ‘sounds’ as part of a centuries-old tradition."
The sound bath created an atmosphere of spacious silence and harmonious resonance, aligning beautifully with the exhibition’s reflection on water as both a sustaining and connecting force. For many attendees, it was a rare opportunity to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect—with themselves, the community, and the natural world.
This event was not only a profound sensory experience but also a celebration of collaboration and community. It wouldn’t have been possible without the generous support of the Canada Council for the Arts, SK Arts, SaskCulture, Saskatchewan Lotteries, the City of Prince Albert, the City of Moose Jaw, and Diane & Roger Mann.
As the evening drew to a close, participants emerged with a renewed sense of calm and connection, embodying the themes of Confluence in both spirit and practice.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us for this special event and to Sandhi for guiding us through this transformative experience. Stay tuned for more events like this, as we continue to explore the intersections of art, nature, and community.
Thank you for making the Mann Art Gallery a place of creativity, connection, and inspiration!
